Cricket Anyone?

With the 2012 Summer Olympics in London rapidly approaching, I started thinking about the sport of Cricket. I wonder how many of the English will be wearing I Love Cricket T-shirts during the games.  Cricket is an incredibly popular sport in England and in countries, which were formerly under British rule, including India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, to name a few.  If this were an Olympic event, the British would certainly be one of the favorites to win.

Cricket first showed up in southern England in the 16th century and became an international sport by the 19th century. It even appeared once way back in the 1900 Olympic games in Paris. Since then it’s been featured in the Asian Games as well as the World Cup of Cricket. The sport did receive Olympic recognition status in 2007 and can now bid for a spot in the 2020 Olympics, along with such sports as karate, roller derby, squash, sport climbing, as well as several others including softball and baseball.

Introducing new sports into the Olympics allows more athletes to experience the pride of being in the Olympics, but it also brings more spectators and viewers from around the world to the games. Just imagine if American Football or Surfing were an Olympic sport, how many more people might be drawn to the games.

My first and only encounter that I’ve had with the game of Cricket was when I was living in Oxford, England. I was relaxing in a park one day, where a match was being played. While it’s a little bit like baseball, in that there’s a ball and a bat, innings and it’s played on a green field, they are actually quite different.

The objective in Cricket is for the “bowler” to toss a ball across the pitch and try to hit wickets that are behind the batters. There is a batter at each end.  If one of the batters hits the ball, and it’s not caught before it hits the ground, then both batters try to score points for their team by running across the pitch and grounding their bats behind the crease. Each run and bat grounding equals one point. If the ball is hit outside the field before touching the ground, like a home run in baseball, the team automatically receives 6 points.

For me, the sport was quite fascinating to watch and quite elegant and refined. Not that the players and fans don’t get into the sport, they do, but there was something regal about it. If Cricket does become an Olympic event in 2020, I’ll certainly be watching!

From the Rose Gardens to the Bike Paths

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Perhaps in a large cosmopolitan city where everything is seemingly at your fingertips; from great restaurants, museums, theatres, and parks to excellent schools, concerts, athletics and so on. You get the idea, a place where you can essentially have it all. Cities with residents in the millions like L.A., NY, Tokyo, Paris, and Barcelona.

Another possibility is that you enjoy the medium sized cities, where you feel like you own the streets. Where there are still plenty of things going on, but maybe the city has a certain vibe. Maybe live music is the main scene or community art galleries reign supreme. Or it’s quite possible that you want to enjoy riding your bike to work on ample bike paths, or you love nature and enjoy being surrounded by it in a city where the outdoors is a major part of your daily life. Maybe you loath driving cars and love the idea of a great public transportation system, but one that’s not so hectic that you have to compete with your fellow commuters to even make it onto the train. Cities like San Francisco, Portland, Austin, and Seattle might make it on your list.

If you’re looking for a place, where there’s a central downtown, where everyone gathers to eat and drink and walk around without feeling overwhelmed, then you might enjoy a small city or college town. Places like Columbia, MO, Oxford, MS, Ashland, OR, Boulder, CO or Ann Arbor, MI are just a few of the places that you might like to call home.

For me personally, I love to live in cities that are unique in some way. Maybe they have cable cars running through them or large parks just waiting to be explored, or an exciting and innovative food scene. Probably the thing that makes me fall in love with a city the most is its walk ability factor. When I’m able to walk around, I feel far more engaged with the pulse of the city than when I’m just passing it by in my car.

I would love to have a residence in all of my favorite cities around the world, but that’s not my reality at the moment, so I usually just settle by wearing one of my favorite cities sweatshirts. This way I’m at least able to share a little bit of my love for one of my favorite cities from around the world with the rest of the world.

Roller Derby 101

Wheels spinning, the crowd screaming as women fly around a banked track on 4 wheels, blocking skaters and taking down everyone in their path who gets in their way of their jammer getting a point. A bout consists of 2-minute periods where 2 teams of 5 skaters each try and score a point, usually in a 90 min period, all the while providing a great show for the crowd.

Roller Derby has been around for many years, showing up as far back as the 1930’s in the United States.  A sub culture of mainly teams comprised of women, that’s making it’s way around the globe at record speeds. It’s also under consideration as a roller sport for the Olympics in 2020.

In Roller Derby there are two types of tracks, banked and flat. The Flat track looks like a long oval, with two long straight-aways and a curved end, while the banked track is also in an oval shape, but the track is elevated on an angle. The skaters are skating on an angle on the straight-aways, and when they hit the curve they swoop down across the curve to the other side, which allows the skater to pick up more momentum when coming around to the other straightaway.

The women and men in roller derby have to be fearless and have great derby names. It’s a sport filled with bruises, falls and exhibitionism plus a whole lot of strategy. When you’re first starting out, you’ll usually be placed in a fresh-meat program. Here you will learn all of the basics; skating, falling, stopping, taking off, jumping, skating backwards, and learning the rules. You will participate in scrimmages and eventually try out for one of the teams in your league, practicing at least 3-4 times per week. Some leagues even have pre-fresh meat training, where you learn the basics at a training of at least once a week. Depending on the size of your league, there could be many different types of teams, from the A-C Teams, All-Starts, Travel Teams, and so on.

Roller Derby is an extreme social sport where skaters participate in charity events, fundraisers, volunteering for the community, and of course having fun hanging out together. It’s also a fantastic way to get into great shape. Roller Derby will kick your ass, and be worth every minute of it. While you’re contemplating on that great derby name for yourself, why not have a look at our derby t-shirts and hoodies. If you’re already on a team, we can make customized clothing for you. So what are you waiting for? Go catch a bout in your hometown. Then maybe you’ll catch the fever too!

Mother’s Day

May 13th is Mother’s Day. One day each year we hold in high reverence to celebrate the most important women in our lives, our Mothers, Grandmothers and our Children’s Mothers. There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate, as long as we’re making these women feel wonderful and special.

Some people gift vacations with the family or trips to the spas without the kids, others gift flowers and chocolates, or a Sunday brunch. All of these are great ways to celebrate the woman you love, but why not also give her something a little different. You could show up to meet your Mother in an “I love You Mom” or “My Mom is the Best” T-shirt, or you could give her a T-shirt that says, “I’m the best Mom according to my Kids” or “#1 Mom in the World”, the possibilities are endless. Whatever you want to say, we can make the shirt for you and your MOM.

Just think of how special she’ll feel when you take her out for that long await picnic or trip to the beach and you’re entire family is paying homage and showing their love for their Mom, by wearing a T-shirt for the entire world to see. It’s also a gift that will keep giving all year round. So why not treat your Mom to the best day possible? Although Mother’s day only comes once a year, you can share the love every day. Show your Mom you care 365 days of the year!

Tired of Not Being Recognized?

Getting dressed in the morning can be an occupational hazard, depending on the job. Wouldn’t it be more fun to wear an Occupations Hoodie to work? So instead of waking up and putting on that suit or uniform with all of those frustrating buttons, you could slip on a comfortable hoodie, to represent your line of work.

Imagine this scenario, you’re an attorney and instead of wearing that 3 piece suit to the office you could wear an occupational hoodie. That’s right. Imagine all of the attention you would gain when you walked in day after day wearing an ultra comfortable hoodie with an emblem or title emblazoned on the front that identifies specifically what you do.

Or perhaps you’re a nurse. Now your uniform may already be comfortable, but with everyone looking the same, wouldn’t it be nice to wear an occupational hoodie that shouts to the hospital or office exactly what you do. Imagine how quickly all of your co-workers would be able to identify your specialty and recognize you instantly. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Maybe you’re just really proud of your job and you want everyone to know what the heck you do with all of your time. Wear an occupational hoodie and no one will be left wondering. Whether you work in the fire department, or the ballet studio, or you’re an actor, or perhaps the CEO of something. Just think of all of the conversations you’ll be generating, around the office and the grocery store. Soon everyone will know you for exactly what you do. Doesn’t that sound amazing!

At Idakoos.com we have some amazing Occupation Hoodies. If we don’t have it, we can make it specifically for you. So if you’re tired of not being recognized for all of that hard work, wear one of these hoodies and you will get the attention you think you deserve! Just don’t hold us accountabl

American Psycho

What is it with angry rude tourists, and why is it when we’re travelling we seem to notice them even more? You know whom I’m talking about, the loud obnoxious people, sitting at the table next to you, who can’t seem to find anything to be happy about. Not to mention the fact that they’re dining steps away from the Eiffel Tower and eating a world-class meal, none of which seems to matter.  They’re miserable and acting entitled and unfortunately, have no problem letting everyone else know how they feel.

Rude American psycho tourists seem to stand out the most for me, especially when I’m travelling outside the country. I’m sure that’s partly because I can completely understand what they’re saying, and also because they generally tend to be more vocal than everyone else in the general vicinity. It’s probably not really they’re fault. The waiter is rude and doesn’t speak English, the food isn’t what they thought they had ordered, and they can’t seem to find a cold beverage anywhere. This is probably their first trip to a non-English speaking country, and they’re simply overwhelmed. Maybe their wallet was stolen on the metro, their English speaking tour wasn’t in English, and their soda is warm. All they probably want is to find something comforting that reminds them of home. So they’ve had a rough day, and everyone else has to hear about it.

Of course, the point for people traveling to foreign countries is to experience something new. Whether it’s the art, the culture, the history, the people, the language, whatever it is, it’s usually very exciting, but can also be overwhelming. It’s easy for people to shut down when things tend to go badly, and something as small as a cultural misunderstanding can ruin someone’s day or entire trip.

I used to hide from the rude American’s. I truly detested their behavior and was terrified that they would figure out that I was also an American and start talking to me. God forbid that happened. What would the locals think! Well over the years, I’ve evolved a bit and my tactic has changed and now I rather welcome the opportunity to talk to them. I’m curious to find out what they’re doing in the country and maybe just speaking to another fellow American in English will calm their nerves or maybe not! Either way, I try to have more empathy for the Rude tourist, American or otherwise, but sometimes it is what it is and they are what they are…rude people.

The next time I go on a trip, I think I’ll wear my American Psycho tank top. That way there will be no questions on what type of Psycho I am. I’ll stand tall and proud, embracing my heritage and psychosis. Care to join me?

Cheers!

Anniversaries. Don’t you just love’em!  They are exciting and celebrated for just about everything. In the romance category, couples tend to celebrate every momentous occasion, at least in the beginning. From where they first met, to the first kiss and then come the monthly and yearly anniversaries.

If the happy couple chooses to get married, then the more complicated anniversaries begin. First there’s the engagement and then the wedding anniversaries that change their name every year, from the 1st being Paper to the 60th being Diamond.  Then come the first apartments together and purchases of homes, to the yearly trips to celebrate the anniversaries, or maybe they are the anniversary. Like the first trip camping together or that exciting trip to Paris, where they conceived their first born.

Speaking of which, then they have the yearly anniversaries of their children’s birthday. Then come all of the little milestones. From the first time the child says it’s first word and then takes it’s first step, to the first day of class or first dance. Life is full of celebrations.

Maybe you’re not ready to take that big of a leap just yet. That’s ok, no need to rush things. But you could profess your love by wearing an “I Love My Girlfriend” Hoodie. And hey, you could always turn that into an Anniversary. Remembering the first time you wore the hoodie, and how happy that made her. Cheers and Salud to all of life’s firsts.

Canvas tote bag, so many options

Are you into paper, plastic, or canvas? In today’s society people are taking a larger role in caring for the environment. From the energy efficient light bulbs they purchase to the types of cars, even down to the types of bags we use for our groceries.

Up front we might need to put more money down for these items, but the payoffs in saving money and resources in the long term are generally worth it. To make a difference in our environmental footprint we need to start somewhere. That doesn’t mean abandoning the car completely for the bike, although in some cities it can be a great option. Not using your car as much is a great start, but so is actively recycling, composting, and just being aware of what we’re doing and the impact we’re making.

I was recently in a grocery store that’s known for selling fresh organic food. The cashier asked me if I wanted to make a small donation to a food charity, as a thank you he gave me a reusable Canvas Tote bag to use in the future. This store only uses paper bags for their groceries, but if I were to bring back that bag or any other bag for that matter, they would give me a credit of 5 cents per bag. And of course I can use this bag for many other things. It’s practical, will save me money and cuts back on my consumption of paper or plastic bags at grocery stores. Sounds good to me.

Aside from making great grocery bags, they can be used for books, games, clothing, or whatever makes sense. If you’re in the market for a canvas tote bag, but you want it to reflect your personality, Idakoos.com has a huge variety to choose from. If you can’t find one that speaks to you, we can customize one personally for you.

Keeping it Simple

One of the aspects that I appreciate most from travelling, with only a backpack, is learning to live with very little clothing. Selecting the clothing to go in the pack is important for me too, it needs to be clothing that I can mix and match easily and wear comfortably. I love to take my favorite T-shirts with me, I know that I’ll be using them for a while so I need to enjoy wearing them, but if it’s something that I’m totally in love with, it won’t make the bag. I don’t want to get so tired of it, or have something happen to it, that it won’t get worn again.

Aside from having to wash your cloths more often, it’s inevitable that you’re going to get tired of wearing the same shirts over and over again. The great thing about travelling light is that you’ll have room to make a purchase or two.

A couple of years ago I was visiting a friend in Lima, Peru. She took me to a shop, in the heart of Miraflores, which only opens a few times a week. This store sells clothing, from large U.S. companies that have minor flaws. While it’s a bit chaotic and you may have to dig threw lots of large piles of clothing, they are priced at a fraction of what you would normally spend. So a T-shirt that might usually cost $20 will only cost you $3. I was able to find a variety of California women’s T-shirts, and popular surf brand clothing. They also sold sweatshirts, shorts, pants, skirts, and swimwear.

It was great to walk away with several fun T-shirts, while spending less than $10. The fact that they were slightly flawed didn’t matter at all. They were serving a purpose by providing relief from my wardrobe boredom.

You’ll never have to worry about buying anything flawed at idakoos.com. We provide high quality fun and inspiring T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and more! When wardrobe boredom strikes, we’ve got your back.
