My Love Affair with Hooded Sweatshirts

Stringer Hoodie

Fall is my favorite time of year. The bright red and yellows that the leaves turn after the hot temperatures of summer and the spring rains are always so pleasing to the eye. The snow has not begun to pile up yet driving everyone indoors. I love to go to the many outdoor festivals during the fall because everyone seems to be in such a cheery mood. The thing I love most about fall, however, is the chance to wear my original hooded sweatshirts.

Since I am a history buff, I love to study the history of my favorite things. The hoodie traces its history clear back to the time of knights in Medieval Europe. It is believed that the first ones were worn by monks as they said their evening prayers. I must confess that I often pray that I can find my favorite original hoodie in the mess that my room becomes but I doubt that is what the monks had in mind.

Fast forward to just before the Great Depression and hoodies became popular in the United States. Especially for those workers in upstate New York who had to work in freezing temperatures. I am so thankful that I can choose to wear my hoodie as a fashion statement and not as a lifesaving garment.

It was not for another four decades, however, that people realized they could make a fashion statement with their favorite hoodies. One factor leading to hoodies becoming popular was the film Rocky where Sylvester Stallone was never caught without his favorites stringer hoodies as he transformed the world from bad to good.

Now, I must confess that I do not wear my hoodie to make a fashion statement. I wear them because they are extremely comfortable. They are like an old friend that I know that I can trust even on the darkest of days. While fall is my favorite time of year, the truth is that I wear my hoodie all year long because it brings me so much comfort.
