The excitement of the competition, the smell of victory, and the anguish of defeat are all common threads in the world of sports. Most of us begin partaking in sports activities when we are small children. Gymnastics and soccer are two very popular sports among children, that teach coordination, flexibility, individual and team sportsmanship, and discipline.
There are hundreds of sports practiced by children and adults around the world. Generally we think of sports being defined as a competitive physical activity. It could involve a couple of people to hundreds people competing against one another. The sport could be an individual sport such as figure skating or a team sport like water polo.
Only the most popular sports make it into the Olympic Games, which are held every four years. Occasionally new sports are added and old sports are removed from the summer and winter games. Of course, each sport has their own major competitions and some are on a world level. Such sports as Rugby, Cricket, and even Roller Derby have huge followings and competitions around the world.
You might not consider the strategic game play of Chess or Bridget to be a competitive sport, but according to the International Olympic Committee they are recognized as mind sports. SportAccord, the international sports federation association also recognizes five non-physical sports.
Sport Accord, provides the closest recognized international agreement on the definition of what categorizes a sport from a leisure activity.
- They must have an element of competition
- They must be in no way harmful to any living creature
- They must not rely on equipment provided by a single supplier (excluding proprietary games such as arena football)
- They must not rely on any ‘luck’ element specifically designed in to the sport
They also recognize that sports can be primarily physical (athletics), primarily mind, (chess) predominately motorized (power boating), primarily coordination, (billiards) or primarily animal supported. (equine sports).
There are artifacts that suggest the Chinese were involved in sports, one of which was gymnastics, dating back to as yearly as 2000 BC. The Egyptians, who were also adept at kept many records of their past, were involved in many sports, including javelin throwing, high jump, wrestling, swimming, and fishing. Ancient Greece was deeply rooted and involved in many sports, so much so, that the Greeks founded the Olympics Games. Much like the modern games, the events were held every four years in a small village in Peloponnesus called Olympia.
Today, sports have become highly organized as well as regulated and our society has more time to partake in them as participants and viewers. From the grade school level to professional sports, we can be involved in the sports in many ways. It’s easier than ever to watch our favorite sports teams or sporting events on television or the Internet or listen to them on broadcast/satellite radio.
The sports industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that caters to just about every sports fan out there. I happen to love sports and enjoy participating and watching them live and at home on the television. I also love to show my support. I’m quite nostalgic and have many sports Sweatshirts; T-shirts for the different sports competitions and sports teams that I love.
