In the early 17th century, St. Patrick's Day was made a Christian feast day and is also recognized by the Catholic church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Anglican Communion, and the Lutheran Church. The holiday is a tribute to Saint Patrick and it honors when Christianity came to Ireland. From the beginning of the holiday, it has been common to celebrate it using Irish culture. St. Patrick started the notion that the shamrock represents the Christian Holy Trinity. This later developed into people wearing green which is extremely popular today every on March 17th.

There is often festivals, parades, céilithe which is a traditional social gathering that includes music and dancing, and people wearing green clothing or shamrocks to show their festivity. But in America, this started after the Irish potato famine. This made hundreds of thousands of Irish people migrate to America, specifically, New York and Boston.

On St. Patrick's Day, Christians will attend church and their lent fasting which prohibits food and alcohol is allowed for one day. Because of this, the holiday is usually associated with drinking alcohol throughout the day. Irish pubs all over are stormed with people celebrating St. Patrick's Day. People around the world get a taste of Irish culture on St. Patrick's Day with Irish music and Irish dancing. These are great ways to show your appreciation. A lot of the St. Patrick's Day traditions are fully Americanized but that is okay because Americans love to celebrate!

In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is a public holiday and it is celebrated throughout the entire world. It is mostly celebrated in Great Britain, United States, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. It is not a legal holiday in the United States but it is celebrated and recognized widely throughout the country in honor of the Irish and the Irish American culture. People around the United States on that day wear the color green, decorate with the color green, eat and drink until they can't anymore, celebrate the religious aspects of the holiday, and put on parades and festivals. The United States has been celebrating St. Patrick's Day ever since the year 1737. It was organized by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston which included a religious service and a feast. This first celebration of St. Patrick's Day was mainly to honor the Irish culture and to pay tribute to the many Irish people that colonies got separated from. Parades for the holiday started in New York in the year 1782, usually military themed. Today, the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York is the longest and and biggest parade for that holiday. There is on estimate, 200,000 people that participate in the parade every year and almost 3,000,000 people that watch the parade. From the 18th century, St. Patrick's evolved from a simple religious holiday to the rowdy holiday that we know today.

Many churches hold religious services for the holiday and some schools/offices even close to commemorate St. Patrick's Day. The day consists of a lot of food, mainly Irish themed including corned beef, corned cabbage, soda bread, coffee, potatos, and shepherd's pie. Some people eat an Irish breakfast which includes black and white pudding, sausage, fried eggs, and fried tomatoes. A fun way to show your appreciation for the holiday is to dye food or drinks green. Many people dye their water, beer, eggs, etc. Towns dye their rivers and parade streets green. The White House fountain is even dyed green. It is a common conception, especially with children that if you do not wear green clothing, you will get pinched. In the Northeast area, St. Parick's Day is commonly celebrated by planting peas because of their color and the great time of year for that specific crop.

Many celebrate the fun holiday by giving Saint Patrick Day gifts. They are usually humor based gifts including funny t-shirts, sweatshirts, a baby onesie, bags, aprons, tank tops, long sleeve shirts and even mugs that represent St. Patty's Day. There are so many great options to celebrate the holiday; for example If you have a psychologist friend , you could give him green and funny psychology t shirts.

These will make your children, friends, and family filled with laughter on this holiday. Instead of picking out something green to wear from their closet, they can wear a funny clothing item that features a humorous phrase and green St. Patrick's Day decorations like a leprechaun hat. The leprechaun is a classic symbol of St. Patrick's Day. Supposedly, if you do not wear green, a tiny leprechaun will come around and pinch you. No one wants that!
